American player Michael Mmoh has admitted that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are a level above Holger Rune. Rune has showcased he possesses the talent to compete for a title at the Cincinnati Open after reaching the semifinals.
Alcaraz and Sinner have established themselves as the leading duo for the generation of players born after 1996. The former has won four Grand Slams, while the latter claimed his first at the Australian Open in January. Rune’s best Grand Slam run was reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open and Wimbledon.
The Danish star won his career’s biggest title at the 2022 Paris Masters, while his most recent title win came at the Munich Open last year. He reached a career-high ranking of World No. 4 last year but has dropped to No. 15 since.
On the other hand, World No.1 Sinner has won four titles this season, while Alcaraz has claimed three, including two Grand Slams.
Following Rune’s run to the semifinals at the Cincinnati Open, Mmoh has backed the youngster to win a Grand Slam in the future. He also added that the Dane was a level lower than Alcaraz and Sinner.
To be honest, he’s always been my pick, and he’s an eventual Grand Slam champion. He just has that ‘it factor'. He’s struggling with a little bit of form right now, a lot of coaching changes. I think he needs a little bit of continuity moving forward, but he has a lot of game. I wouldn’t put him next to Sinner and Alcaraz, but he’s a talented young kid who has a lot of game.Michael Mmoh said (via Tennis365)
Mmoh is World No. 146 in the ATP ranking and has lost to Rune in straight sets in their last two meetings. Both matches came earlier this year in Acapulco and Montpelier.
Holger Rune admits he believes “the process” following his good run at the Cincinnati Open
Holger Rune admitted that it’s all about the process following his good run at the Cincinnati Open. The Danish star has beaten the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Gael Monfils, and Jack Draper at the tournament.
His brilliant run ended in the semifinals after a 6-4, 1-6, 6(4)-7 defeat to American Frances Tiafoe. Following his 6-4, 6-2 quarterfinal win against Draper, Rune revealed that he was determined to get into the later stages of the tournament.
I said after the first round that I would need to get better to go deep and here I am playing some very, very good tennis. It’s just about the process and I’ve been working hard from the first match.Holger Rune said via ATP.
Though the 21-year-old could not go all the way in Cincinnati, he will hope to take the momentum into the US Open, which starts on August 26.
