Being honest despite the uncertainty and risk that comes with emotional exposure is a defining aspect of Cody Lovaas’ newest EP, Pull Out Couch. As you hear Cody transform through feelings of excitement, frustration, pain, uncertainty and finally acceptance, listeners equally have the opportunity to reshape.
These songs encapsulate the potency of vulnerability, and how it can assist in coming to terms with the painful parts of the human experience. Lovaas’ ability to accept his own pain is perhaps why listeners are left so moved. Whether he knows it or not, by offering us the deepest parts of him, it’s suggested that it’s ok to crack open the gaping parts of ourselves, reflect, and perhaps even celebrate the feelings that once left us broken.
By wearing his heart on his sleeve, Cody has given fans the space to do so, too.
Last week, Cody jumped on our Instagram Live for a Q&A about his creative process and the pressures that come with being an altruistic 22-year-old.
A stand-alone track off the EP, “Tired” touches on the struggles that come from being empathetic within a broken system.
“‘Tired’ was written from the perspective of having too much empathy for a world that you don’t feel like you are able to change,” Cody tells Celeb Secrets. Instead of attempting to stop an unending cycle, Cody “made a promise to stop himself from making excuses and to live the life I he wants to live tomorrow, today.”
These are the sort of underlying themes that set Cody apart from the rest. The passion and resilience that exudes from these tracks are what pull a listener out of whatever it is they are doing and forces them to listen. Every instrument, every chord, every run is SO intentional it conveys the perfect emotion to create the perfect emotion within us.
The lyrics and melody off perhaps my favorite track, “Be Here,” offer a beautiful dissonance. As the song spills over with gorgeous chords and musical arrangements, the pain in the lyricism and Lovaas’ voice offers insight into the world of beauty and pain and their reliance on coexistence.
The take away from Pull Out Couch is immense. Not only will the EP leave your ears wanting more but your heart feeling broken open in the way that makes space for growth.
