Early Life

Barker was born in Darrington, Washington on December 12, 1923. He was enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and worked part-time for a radio show, KTTS-FM Radio while attending college.

He however never was actively on duty during his tenure at the U.S Navy. He attended Drury College in Missouri, received a basketball scholarship and graduated with a degree in Economics. He moved to California to work in broadcasting.

Career

After moving to California in 1950, Barker was given his own radio show ‘The Bob Barker Show,’ which ran for 6 years. He was also hosting the radio show on KNX in Los Angeles. He was spotted by ‘Truth or Consequences,’ producer Ralph Edwards who wanted to replace him with his old host. He liked the style and tone in which Barker spoke to the audience.

Barker’s next gig was ‘Truth or Consequences,’ which ran from 1956 to 1975. CBS strongly expressed its interest in bringing Bob Barker as a host for their newest game show ‘The Price is Right.’

Barker however rejected the offer and instead hosted another CBS show ‘The Joker’s Wild,’ by Jack Barry. He however took up the offer later and hosted ‘The Price is Right,’ from 1972 to 2007.

He announced his retirement in his final episode in June 2007. Barker subsequently made three guest appearances on the show, the first time to promote his autobiography ‘Priceless Memories.’

He made his second appearance on the show in 2013 to celebrate his 90th birthday. His latest appearance was in 2015 when he played an April Fool’s prank on the game show host Drew Carry, who hosted a part of the show,

He was considered the best of the 80 shows that hosted the show. He also agreed to be a rotating co-host of the show ‘The Huckabee Show,’ which was co-hosted by Mike Huckabee in 2010.

Barker has appeared on several talk shows such as The Arsenio Hall Show, Donny & Marie, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Larry King Live, the Late Show with David Letterman, and The Wayne Brady Show.

Barker entered the entertainment industry by playing support roles and making cameo appearances. He starred in Adam Sandler’s ‘Happy Gilmore,’ and played himself in the movie.

He made cameo appearances on the soap operas ‘The Bold and the Beautiful,’ and ‘The Nanny.’ He voiced a character on the popular animated series ‘SpongeBob SquarePants,’ Bob Barnacle.

He appeared in the series Bonanza,’ in 1960 playing the character Denver McKee. Barker has starred in commercials such as State Farm Insurance’s ‘Magic Jingle’ campaign.

He appeared in an advertisement for Republican party candidate David Jolly, endorsing him for the 2014 Florida’s 13TH Congressional District special election. Jolly eventually won a seat at the house.

Barker has won 19 Daytime Emmy Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1985 presented at the Emmy Awards in 1985. He has also won 14 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host for the show ‘The Price is Right.’

Barker met his wife, Dorothy Jo while studying in high school and the two began dating. He married her during his leave from the Navy in 1945. Barker has had multiple health issues during his tenure of hosting game shows.

He experienced clumsiness and was diagnosed with a blocked left carotid artery and had a carotid endarterectomy to fix the blockage. He also experienced a stroke while filming the show ‘The Price is Right,’ and was hospitalized.

Bob Barker also got skin cancer but got rid of it in the early stages of the disease. Of late, Bob Barker’s old age has him frequently getting into minor accidents and falls which got him many fractures.

Legal Issues

Barker was reported for sexual harassment of the former model Dian Parkinson while having an affair with the host during the show ‘The Price is Right.’ The model said he received threats of getting fired and she immediately dropped the lawsuit.

In 1995, model Holly Hallstrom was fired from the show due to weight gain and filed a lawsuit. It however ended when Hallstrom chose to take a settlement instead after Barker also countersued her.

In 2007, Deborah Curling sued CBS’ ‘The Price is Right,’ and Barker. She claimed that she was forced to quit the show and testified against Barker. She stated that the work environment was toxic and intolerable due to her being black.

Activism

Barker is an animal rights activist and has been a vegetarian for over 3 decades. He even stepped down as a host from the Miss USA pageant when the show refused to remove animal fur-made prizes.

Barker along with United Activists for Animal Rights accused a media project ‘The American Humane Association,’ of animal mistreatment and condoning. He was however sued for $10 million in return for slander and invasion of privacy.

He found the DJ&T Foundation and contributed millions of dollars to neutering animal programs and founded a rescue park and provided facilities over the United States. He also donated $1 million to the Columbia Law School.
